Swiggy, the popular food delivery platform, has unveiled some fascinating insights into the nation’s love for Idlis as it commemorates World Idli Day on March 30th each year. The data collected by Swiggy from March 30, 2023, to March 25, 2024, sheds light on the widespread adoration for this South Indian delicacy among Indian consumers.

In the past year, Swiggy has delivered millions of servings of Idlis, showcasing the dish’s immense popularity across the country. The top three cities for Idli orders were revealed to be Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai, with Mumbai, Pune, Coimbatore, Delhi, Vizag, Kolkata, and Vijayawada following closely behind.

One Swiggy customer from Hyderabad has truly stood out for their love of Idlis, having spent a staggering INR 7.3 lakh on this South Indian favorite in the last year alone.

The analysis also uncovers that the peak time for Idli orders falls between 8 AM to 10 AM, with residents of cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Mumbai also enjoying Idlis during dinner hours.

The traditional plain Idli remains the top choice across all urban centers, typically ordered in servings of two pieces. However, Rava Idli is a favorite in Bangalore, while ghee/neyi karam podi Idli is preferred in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Thatte Idli and mini Idli also consistently feature in Idli orders across various cities.

According to Swiggy’s findings, Idlis rank as the second most popular breakfast item on the platform, just behind masala dosa.

Customers often pair their favorite Idlis with accompaniments such as sambar, coconut chutney, karam podi, medu vada, saagu, ghee, red chutney, Jain sambar, tea, and coffee, as per Swiggy’s observations.

Swiggy also highlights the top eateries renowned for their delicious Idlis, including Asha Tiffins in Bangalore, A2B – Adyar Ananda Bhavan in Bangalore and Chennai, Varalakshmi Tiffins in Hyderabad, Sree Akshayam in Chennai, and Veena Stores in Bangalore.

Overall, Swiggy’s findings showcase the enduring love and popularity of Idlis among Indian consumers, making it a staple choice for breakfast and beyond.
