SGA Senator Proposes Resolution to Change Location of Pickleball Courts

The Student Government Association at Wichita State University is taking action in response to student concerns over the potential removal of trees on campus. Student Senator Andrew Bobbitt has authored a resolution to reconsider the location of the new pickleball courts, which are set to be demolished to make way for a new indoor softball practice facility.

The current pickleball courts, located near the Heskett Center and Wilkins softball complex, are scheduled to be torn down on September 14 for the groundbreaking of the new facility. The proposed new location for the courts is between the Heskett Center, Lindquist Hall, and Hubbard Hall.

Students have expressed dismay over the removal of trees that would be necessary for the relocation of the courts. Bobbitt’s resolution aims to address these concerns by suggesting a slight shift in the planned location to preserve the trees.

Bobbitt explained that the university has a history of removing trees on campus, particularly during the conversion of the former golf course into the innovation campus. He emphasized the importance of considering alternatives to save the trees and maintain the campus environment.

The resolution will be reviewed by a committee next week and, if approved, will be voted on by the Student Government Association on September 11. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as students and university officials work towards a solution that balances the needs of the campus community and the preservation of green spaces.
