“Pickleball Program in Beverly Hills Gains Support for Permanent Status and Improvements”
The pickleball craze has taken Beverly Hills by storm, with players advocating for the city to make the sport a permanent fixture in its recreational offerings. At a recent Recreation and Parks Commission meeting, more than a dozen passionate pickleball enthusiasts voiced their support for the program and called for improvements to the existing courts.
Chair Amie Sherry, a dedicated pickleball player herself, expressed the commission’s commitment to making the necessary changes to accommodate the growing popularity of the sport. Despite the forthcoming survey results, the commission agreed to move forward with plans to upgrade the courts, improve the online sign-up system, and expand the number of pickleball courts in the city.
Since its inception in 2020, the pickleball program has seen a significant increase in reservations, with over 11,000 bookings so far this year. However, players have raised concerns about the maintenance of the courts at Roxbury Park and La Cienega Park, citing safety hazards and inadequate facilities.
The commissioners unanimously pledged their support for the pickleball community and vowed to address the issues promptly. Community Services Director Stephanie Harris acknowledged the need for additional funding to make the necessary improvements and stated that the matter will be brought before the City Council for a vote in early October.
With pickleball’s popularity showing no signs of slowing down, Beverly Hills is poised to become a premier destination for enthusiasts of the fast-growing sport. Stay tuned for updates on the city’s pickleball program as it continues to evolve and expand to meet the demands of its dedicated players.
