“The Open: New Washroom and Pickleball Court Enhance Calgary’s East Village”

The Open, a new permanent washroom and pickleball court in downtown Calgary’s East Village, has officially opened its doors to the public. This unique piece of public infrastructure not only serves a practical purpose but also aims to create a vibrant and inclusive community space for residents and visitors alike.

Located at the intersection of 7 Avenue and 6 Street S.E., The Open is strategically positioned next to East Village’s off-leash dog park, playground, and community garden, making it a central hub for the community’s social activities. The facility, designed by Winnipeg-based Public City and constructed by Delnor Construction, features four universally accessible all-gender bathroom stalls, including one wheelchair-accessible stall with grab bars, and a shared handwashing space. Additionally, the adjoining pickleball court boasts a living green roof and tiered spectator seating, adding a touch of nature to the urban landscape.

The design of The Open was selected as the winning submission in a national public design competition, standing out for its imaginative and functional approach to blending sport with utility. The teal metal screen wrapping the building, vibrant court colors, and sedum-planted roof all contribute to the facility’s unique and eye-catching design.

Councillor Terry Wong praised the project, highlighting how it exemplifies the ongoing transformation of East Village into a dynamic and inviting urban neighborhood. The collaboration between CMLC, the Calgary Police Service, social outreach organizations, and safety experts to integrate Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles ensures that The Open is not only aesthetically pleasing but also safe and secure for all users.

With its thoughtful design and commitment to fostering community engagement, The Open is set to become a beloved gathering spot for residents and visitors in Calgary’s East Village, enhancing the quality of life for all who come to enjoy everything the vibrant neighborhood has to offer.
