2024 Home Design Trends: Brutalism, Sensory Gardens, and More According to Zillow

In a surprising turn of events, brutalist style and sensory gardens are set to dominate the home design trends of 2024, according to new predictions from Zillow. The real estate giant analyzed nearly 300 home feature and design style keywords mentioned in listing descriptions to determine which trends have seen the most growth in popularity.

Leading the pack is the brutalism trend, characterized by raw building materials and stripped-back interiors. Zillow reported a staggering 452% increase in listing mentions for this minimalist mid-century style. Additionally, sensory gardens or pathways, which offer therapeutic outdoor spaces designed to stimulate the senses, saw a 314% increase in popularity.

Cold plunge pools are also on the rise, with mentions increasing by 130% as more homeowners seek wellness amenities that improve circulation and reduce inflammation. Pickleball courts have emerged as a top trend for sporting enthusiasts, with mentions increasing by 64% on Zillow listings and doubling on StreetEasy, Zillow’s New York City brand.

Art-related trends such as Murano glass chandeliers and eclectic murals are also gaining traction, with mentions growing by 58% and 18%, respectively. However, some trends are on their way out in 2024, including shou sugi ban and the “cloffice” concept, which saw decreases in mentions by 69% and 54%, respectively.

As the housing market continues to evolve, it’s clear that homebuyers are gravitating towards unique and innovative design features that cater to their lifestyle and preferences. Stay tuned to see how these trends shape the real estate landscape in the coming year.
