The YMCA of Greater Brandywine Joins Active Aging Week 2021 to Promote Health and Wellness for Older Adults

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the importance of maintaining good physical and mental health has never been more crucial. In an effort to encourage healthy lifestyles among adults, the YMCA of Greater Brandywine has partnered with Active Aging Week 2021, presented by Humana.

Active Aging Week, now in its 19th year, is organized by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) and offers a variety of opportunities for adults to engage in physical, social, cognitive, spiritual, professional, and civic activities. The goal is to promote overall well-being and encourage individuals to stay active and connected.

The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is dedicated to providing a wide range of activities for older adults in the community, including in-person and virtual group exercise classes, targeted fitness and aqua classes, swimming, pickleball, social events, and more. As part of Active Aging Week, the YMCA is offering a free seven-day trial membership for those interested in participating in the activities of their choice.

Denise Day, president of YGBW, emphasized the importance of addressing the adverse effects of isolation and lack of social connections, particularly for older individuals. She stated, “While we have prioritized COVID prevention and safety measures over the past 18 months, we also recognize the need to focus on the overall well-being of our community members, especially our older adults.”

YGBW is one of many organizations participating in Active Aging Week, including senior living communities, senior centers, fitness centers, libraries, and other YMCAs. These organizations are offering events and activities at low or no cost to participants, with the goal of promoting health and wellness among older adults.

Colin Milner, founder and CEO of ICAA, highlighted the importance of integrating wellness into organizational operations to support the health and well-being of older individuals. He stated, “Active Aging Week is an ideal initiative to reclaim health and well-being for older people and encourage them to stay active and engaged.”

For those interested in participating in Active Aging Week activities at the YMCA of Greater Brandywine, a free trial membership is available. Individuals can request a trial pass and browse the offerings on the YMCA website. Stay active, stay connected, and prioritize your health during Active Aging Week 2021.
