The Wood River Pickleball Alliance, a community-focused group with over 400 members, is expanding pickleball beyond its traditional older demographic by teaching the sport to middle school students through a free summer camp at The Space, an afterschool program. Supported by Gravity Fitness and led by top national player Lee Sponaugle, the camp aims to promote physical and mental health by encouraging kids to be active and engage socially, while also fostering intergenerational play with family members.
Sponaugle highlighted pickleball’s growing popularity among younger players, noting that 20% of American players are aged 18 to 24, with many colleges now offering teams and scholarships. The camp introduces kids to fundamental skills like hand-eye coordination and proper serving techniques, making the sport accessible and fun. Participants like 11-year-old Eva Rodriguez expressed enthusiasm for learning pickleball, which is praised for its social and leadership benefits alongside physical activity.
