Ben Johns: The No. 1 Mixed Doubles Player Embraces New Training in Florida
Ben Johns: The No. 1 Mixed Doubles Player Thrives in Florida’s Pickleball Paradise
In the fast-paced world of pickleball, few names resonate as powerfully as Ben Johns. Currently reigning as the World No. 1 in mixed doubles alongside his formidable partner, Anna Leigh Waters, Johns has recently made headlines not just for his impressive rankings, but also for his strategic move from Austin, Texas, to Boca Raton, Florida—an emerging hub for the sport.
Johns, often hailed as the greatest pickleball player of all time, made the transition in March 2024 to enhance his training regimen. After a successful stint in Texas, where he solidified his reputation, the move to Florida was a calculated decision aimed at elevating his game further. “In Florida, there’s a higher quantity of high-level pros, so it’s beneficial to have that because you can set up games and drill,” Johns explained.
The Sunshine State has become a magnet for elite pickleball talent, with players like Anna Bright, JW and Jorja Johnson, and Gabe Tardio also calling it home. This vibrant community allows Johns to engage in high-level practice sessions, a crucial factor in maintaining his competitive edge. “Anna Leigh and I practice together occasionally, but we mostly just drill. We don’t play too many games because we play so many matches together on tour,” he shared.
Despite his recent loss of the No. 1 spot in men’s singles to Federico Staksrud on August 18, 2024, Johns remains focused on his mixed doubles partnership. The duo has achieved remarkable success, winning 16 consecutive events between March 2023 and February 2024, and accumulating a total of 31 titles. Their synergy on the court is undeniable, and being geographically close allows them to refine their skills together.
Johns has also adapted his training approach since relocating. “I used to strictly drill 100 percent of the time with Collin [Johns]. I did not play any games. But after moving to Florida, I now drill maybe 20 percent of the time and play 80 percent games,” he noted. This shift has proven beneficial, allowing him to apply his skills in real-game scenarios, which he believes is essential for growth.
Outside of pickleball, Johns embraces a balanced lifestyle. “I make time to do the things I enjoy, like reading a good fantasy book or playing Fortnite. If I don’t do that, it’s hard not to get complacent or fall into a monotonous routine,” he said. This blend of leisure and rigorous training keeps him motivated and engaged.
As he settles into his new home, Johns is not just focused on his own development but also on fostering a thriving pickleball community in Florida. With his sights set on future competitions, the combination of high-level training, a supportive environment, and personal well-being positions him well for continued success.
In a sport that’s rapidly gaining popularity, Ben Johns stands at the forefront, not just as a player, but as a beacon of dedication and passion for pickleball. As he continues to hone his skills in Florida, fans eagerly await what this pickleball powerhouse will achieve next.
