Rehabilitation Project Proposed for Hasbrouck Park: Improving Recreational Facilities for the Community

The Village of New Paltz is taking steps to improve the beloved Hasbrouck Park by submitting an application for the Ulster County Municipal Parks and Recreation Grant. The project aims to rehabilitate the pickleball and basketball courts, as well as the surrounding area, to make the park safer and more accessible for all community members.

The grant application highlights the benefits of the project in terms of public service, health, and safety. With a population that is 63% low/moderate income, the Village of New Paltz sees the park as a vital space for providing affordable and healthy recreational opportunities for families, friends, and visitors to the community.

Funded by the Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, the MPRG is a matching grant that requires the municipality to provide at least half of the total project cost. The Village of New Paltz has committed $175,621 as a match and requested the maximum MPRG funding of $100,000, bringing the total project budget to $275,621.

Community support for the project has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents expressing their excitement for the improvements to Hasbrouck Park. Many see the park as a valuable space for physical and mental health, community building, and overall well-being.

The Hasbrouck Park project is just one part of the Village’s larger plan to create more recreational activities for young people in the area. With a potential skate park in the works, the Village is committed to providing safe and accessible spaces for all community members to enjoy. If the grant is awarded, work on the project is expected to begin next year, bringing much-needed improvements to this popular community park.
