Ogden man known as ‘father of professional pickleball’ to be inducted into Hall of Fame

John Gullo, the “father of professional pickleball,” is set to be inducted into the Pickleball Hall of Fame in Mesa, Arizona on November 14. Gullo, a resident of Ogden, Utah, has been instrumental in popularizing the sport of pickleball in the state and beyond.

Pickleball, a fast-growing sport in the country, has seen a surge in popularity in Utah, with the city of Orem even ranking No. 2 in the nation as a prime destination to play. Gullo’s dedication and passion for the sport have played a significant role in its growth and accessibility in the state.

Gullo’s journey with pickleball began in 2008 when he weighed 310 pounds and underwent five bypass surgeries. Bored with traditional forms of exercise during cardiac rehab, he discovered pickleball and ended up losing a significant amount of weight while enjoying the game.

Despite facing physical challenges such as a fused ankle and a bad knee at 80 years old, Gullo continues to play pickleball at least three times a week. He believes that pickleball is a game that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, emphasizing its social and inclusive nature.

Gullo’s contributions to the sport go beyond playing; he has been actively involved in expanding pickleball by forming associations, organizing tournaments, and promoting the game among youth. His efforts have led to the establishment of professional tours, sponsorships, and increased visibility of pickleball on TV channels.

As Gullo prepares for his induction into the Pickleball Hall of Fame, he remains humble and grateful for the recognition. He encourages anyone interested in pickleball to join the community and experience the joy of playing the “most social game ever invented.”

With his mantra of “Play hard, work hard, and do something for your community,” John Gullo has left a lasting impact on the world of pickleball and continues to inspire others to embrace the sport with passion and dedication.
