UT Pickleball Club: A Growing Community of Students
The Rise of Pickleball: UT Students Form Club to Embrace the Trend
Pickleball, a sport that has been rapidly gaining popularity across the U.S., has now captured the attention of students at the University of Tennessee. A group of enthusiastic students have come together to form their very own pickleball club, showcasing their love for the sport and creating a vibrant community on campus.
Club president Emily Betts, a junior studying business analytics, shared that the pickleball club has seen a remarkable growth in interest, with over 800 people showing interest and at least 100 actively participating in club activities. The sound of paddles hitting the ball and the cheerful banter of players can often be heard at the TRECS courts, where the club regularly meets.
Pickleball, a sport that combines elements from various racquet-like sports, was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum. The sport has seen a significant surge in participation in recent years, with a 51.8% growth from 2022-23, according to the latest data from the 2024 State of Pickleball Report.
Despite its growing popularity, pickleball remains accessible and affordable for players. UT students can rent out free paddles from TRECS, making it easier for newcomers to try out the sport. Club president Betts ensures that equipment never becomes a barrier for anyone interested in playing pickleball, often bringing extra paddles for those in need.
The pickleball club at UT offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for students to learn the sport, make friends, and relieve stress. Caroline Nystrom, a junior studying public relations, joined the club last semester and emphasized the social aspect of pickleball, highlighting the camaraderie and fun that comes with playing the sport.
For those hesitant to join, Nystrom encourages them not to be intimidated and to give pickleball a try. The club, which is open to all UT students, provides a year-round space for members to enjoy the sport, build friendships, and participate in competitions. With a competitive team of 35 members, the club aims to continue growing and expanding its presence on campus.
Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, the UT pickleball club offers a welcoming community for all. To learn more about the club and how to get involved, students can connect with the club on platforms like GroupMe and Instagram. Join the pickleball craze and be part of this exciting and growing sport at UT!
