Introducing the UBC Pickleball Club: A New Campus Sports Phenomenon

The UBC Pickleball Club: A New Campus Trend

Pickleball, a sport rapidly gaining popularity across the country, has officially made its way to the University of British Columbia campus with the establishment of the UBC Pickleball Club. Founded by students Mathias Henkelman and Josh MacDonald, the club aims to introduce more people to the sport, promote physical wellbeing, and create a community within the student body.

MacDonald, a third-year kinesiology student, noticed a lack of pickleball options at UBC and saw an opportunity to fill that gap. “I was super taken aback by the fact that there wasn’t a club started already, given how many people I knew who played,” he said.

The club, run by a team of nine, offers opportunities for both beginners and experienced players to learn, compete, and connect. Their first event on October 11 sold out in two days and was attended by 24 students of all levels. MacDonald described the event as a success, with newcomers picking up the sport quickly and having a great time.

Membership for the UBC Pickleball Club costs $15 and includes access to equipment, free or discounted access to club events, and the opportunity to participate in weekly events and tournaments. The club is currently working with UBC Recreation to secure weekly times for their activities.

Looking ahead, the club hopes to expand its offerings with more tournaments and social events. Henkelman expressed their focus on getting people to play and enjoy the sport. With pickleball’s inclusive nature and low barrier to entry, the UBC Pickleball Club is set to become a popular campus trend.
