Town of Delaware Announces Community Shred Day and Spring Cleanup

HORTONVILLE — The Town of Delaware is gearing up for a busy Saturday, April 26, with two community-focused events designed to promote cleanliness and sustainability. In partnership with Jeff Bank, the town will host its annual Community Shred Day from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Callicoon Creek Park. This event provides residents with a secure way to dispose of sensitive documents, ensuring that personal information remains protected.

The date for the shred event was initially changed but has now reverted to its original schedule, allowing residents to plan accordingly. Simultaneously, the Spring Cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., encouraging residents to declutter their homes and dispose of unwanted items responsibly.

These announcements were made during the Town’s regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 9, where various community updates were shared.

Building Inspector Kristopher Scullion reported a surge in new home construction, highlighting the recent completion of a home in Kenoza Lake Estates and the initiation of another near the Stone Arch Bridge. Scullion, who recently completed his training for the year, noted that new building code books are set to be released next year, featuring stricter energy regulations. “We’re waiting on the new code books to come out… the biggest changes will be in the energy code,” he explained.

In light of the heavy rains forecasted for the upcoming weekend, Town Clerk Tess McBeath announced that the Upper Delaware Litter Sweep has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 19. McBeath encouraged local residents to participate, offering supplies such as vests, grabbers, trash bags, and coupons for free dumping at the transfer station.

Bill Brown from Delaware Engineering provided updates on ongoing projects, including the construction of a new wellhouse. “The masons mobilized last week and started laying concrete blocks,” he said, although recent snow has slowed progress. Brown anticipates that the block work will be completed soon, followed by roofing and interior fittings. Additionally, he mentioned that water line installation on Route 17B, just past Roche’s Garage, will commence once asphalt plants open.

Brown also discussed an exciting expansion project at the Delaware Youth Center, aimed at accommodating pickleball courts. With grant funding secured from Sullivan 180, the project has attracted the lowest bid from Northeast Paving and Sealcoating of Ellenville. Brown expects the pickleball court to be completed by this summer, providing a new recreational opportunity for residents.

As the Town of Delaware prepares for these initiatives, community engagement remains a priority, fostering a spirit of collaboration and environmental stewardship among residents.
