Chuck Golliher, the club’s president, highlighted the appeal of pickleball, noting its simplicity and versatility. “It appeals to all ages from 8 to over 80,” Golliher said. The club, founded in 2017, has seen a steady increase in membership, reflecting the growing interest in the sport.

However, with the rise in pickleball’s popularity, local doctors have also noticed an uptick in foot and ankle injuries among players. Dr. Ashley Dikis from Des Moines University’s Foot and Ankle Clinic emphasized the importance of warming up before playing to prevent injuries. She mentioned common injuries like Achilles tendon injuries and plantar fasciitis, stressing the significance of wearing proper footwear.

Despite the risk of injuries, both Golliher and Dikis emphasized the numerous benefits of pickleball, especially for older adults. Maintaining an active lifestyle through activities like pickleball can help individuals stay healthy and engaged as they age.
