Concerns Raised Over Relocation of Pickleball Courts at Wichita State University
The decision to demolish and relocate the pickleball courts at Wichita State University has sparked controversy among students and faculty. The relatively new courts, which have been well-used and well-situated near the Heskett Center, are set to be moved to make way for renovations at Wilkins Stadium.
Many are questioning the need to uproot existing facilities instead of enhancing them, especially considering the ideal location of the current courts. Positioned next to the Heskett Center and centrally located among dorm buildings, the courts are easily accessible to students and faculty. Moving them to a new location between Hubbard Hall, Lindquist Hall, and Heskett Center would inconvenience those who use the area for walking to classes, dining, or lounging in the grass.
Furthermore, the proposed site for the new courts on the older side of campus would require the removal of mature trees, which have been part of the campus landscape for decades. Instead of cutting down healthy trees, some suggest enhancing the green space by planting additional trees.
With construction scheduled to begin this month, during a time when the courts are still in high demand, students are growing increasingly frustrated with the constant disruptions to campus life. Many feel that they should be able to enjoy the courts during the fall months, rather than navigating construction zones on their way to class.
As Wichita State University continues to expand its campus, the decision to relocate the pickleball courts has raised critical concerns among the student body. The debate over whether to enhance existing facilities or uproot them for new developments is ongoing, as construction is set to begin this month.
