The Rise of Pickleball in Asia: From Passion to Profession for Singaporean Couple
Singaporean couple turns pickleball hobby into passion, setting up academy and facility
Singaporean Jeremy Soh and his fiancée Jeovanne Poernomo discovered a new passion for pickleball after initially taking it up as an activity for their parents. This newfound love for the sport led them to travel to countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam for pickleball competitions.
In November 2023, just months after picking up their first pickleball paddle, the couple set up Performance Pickleball, a pickleball facility in Singapore’s northeast region of Punggol. They also launched lesson plans for players of all ages, from adult beginners to young children.
Soh highlighted the growing popularity of pickleball among younger players, contrary to the misconception that it is a sport only for older individuals. He noted that the sport’s appeal lies in its hand-eye coordination challenge, coupled with its accessibility and social nature.
The rise of pickleball in Singapore is part of a larger trend in Asia, with countries like Vietnam and India also experiencing a surge in interest. In China, influencers have helped boost the sport’s popularity by showcasing stylish athleisure outfits and unique pickleball paddles.
Despite its recent hip rebranding, pickleball is not just a passing fad, according to Darren Ho, spokesman for Singapore Pickleball. The sport’s ease of learning and multigenerational appeal make it a sustainable choice for players of all ages and skill levels.
With the support of associations, facilities, and enthusiasts, pickleball is poised to continue its growth in Singapore and across Asia, attracting a diverse range of players and fostering a vibrant community around the sport.
