The fast-growing sport of pickleball is not only providing physical benefits to older adults but is also proving to be a game-changer for their mental health, according to a new survey conducted by Carewell, a North Carolina-based company that supports caregivers.

The survey of 1,000 Americans revealed that nearly 70% of older adults reported reduced stress and anxiety after playing pickleball, with 64% finding the game to be “uplifting.” Additionally, half of the seniors surveyed valued the sense of community that comes with pickleball, and one in three experienced enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.

James Campigotto, one of the researchers for Carewell, highlighted the significant impact of pickleball on seniors’ well-being, stating, “Our study sheds light on a compelling shift in societal attitudes toward aging, fitness, and family dynamics. The data proves the multifaceted impact of this sport on the well-being of seniors.”

Furthermore, the survey found that pickleball is not only benefiting older adults but also providing an opportunity for younger family members to connect with their elders. Around 36% of Gen Z and millennial players use physical activities like pickleball as a means to strengthen family bonds.

Laura Gainor, a Florida-based founder of a pickleball marketing agency, emphasized the surge in pickleball’s popularity, attributing it to the sport’s adaptability, accessibility, and ability to foster a sense of community and connection across generations.

As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, experts are advising seniors to take precautions to prevent injuries. Proper court shoes, warm-up exercises, and incorporating strength training into regular workout routines are recommended to reduce the risk of common pickleball-related injuries.

Overall, pickleball is not just a game but a lifestyle that promotes physical and mental well-being, strengthens family relationships, and fosters a sense of community. With its growing appeal and benefits for all ages, pickleball is proving to be more than just a sport—it’s a way of life that is changing the game for seniors and their loved ones.
