According to a new survey conducted by Carewell, a North Carolina-based company that supports caregivers, playing pickleball has a positive impact on seniors’ psyche.
The survey of 1,000 Americans revealed that nearly 70% of older adults reported reduced stress and anxiety after playing pickleball, while 64% found the game to be “uplifting.” Additionally, half of the seniors surveyed valued the sense of community that comes with pickleball, and one in three experienced enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.
James Campigotto, one of the researchers for Carewell, highlighted the significance of the findings, stating, “Overall, our study sheds light on a compelling shift in societal attitudes toward aging, fitness, and family dynamics. The data proves the multifaceted impact of this sport on the well-being of seniors.”
The benefits of pickleball extend beyond just mental health. The game also provides seniors with the opportunity to spend time with younger family members, with around 36% of Gen Z and millennial players using physical activities like pickleball as a means to connect with their older family members.
Laura Gainor, a Florida-based founder of Vossberg Gainor, noted that the pandemic played a pivotal role in the sport’s quick growth, as individuals sought outdoor activities that allowed for both recreation and social interaction. She emphasized that pickleball’s popularity underscores its status as a sport that provides physical and mental well-being while fostering a sense of community and connection across generations.
As pickleball continues to grow in popularity, experts are also emphasizing the importance of safety for senior players. Proper court shoes, warm-up routines, and strength training are all essential components to prevent injuries and ensure a positive playing experience for seniors.
With its ability to improve mental health, foster social connections, and provide a fun and engaging physical activity, pickleball is proving to be much more than just a game – it’s a valuable tool for promoting overall well-being in older adults.
