Playing Pickleball: A Prescription for Better Mental Health for Seniors

The Rise of Pickleball: How the Sport is Improving Mental Health for Seniors

Pickleball, a paddle sport that has been gaining popularity in recent years, is not just a game for older adults – it’s also proving to be a powerful tool for improving mental health. According to a new survey conducted by Carewell, a North Carolina-based company that supports caregivers, playing pickleball has a range of positive effects on seniors’ well-being.

The survey of 1,000 Americans revealed that nearly 70% of older adults reported reduced stress and anxiety after playing pickleball, while 64% found the game to be “uplifting.” Additionally, half of the seniors surveyed valued the sense of community that comes with pickleball, and one in three experienced enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.

James Campigotto, one of the researchers for Carewell, highlighted the impact of the sport on seniors’ overall well-being. “Our study sheds light on a compelling shift in societal attitudes toward aging, fitness, and family dynamics,” he told Fox News Digital. “The data proves the multifaceted impact of this sport on the well-being of seniors.”

Pickleball also provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with younger family members, with around 36% of Gen Z and millennial players using physical activities like pickleball as a means of bonding with their older relatives.

Laura Gainor, founder of Vossberg Gainor and Pickleball in the Sun, noted that the pandemic played a significant role in the sport’s growth, as individuals sought outdoor activities that allowed for both recreation and social interaction. She emphasized the adaptability and accessibility of pickleball, making it an appealing choice for people of all ages.

However, as the popularity of pickleball continues to rise, so does the potential for injuries. Proper footwear and warm-up routines are essential for seniors to prevent common injuries on the court. Arnold Poblete, a certified pickleball instructor, recommends a dynamic warm-up and knowing one’s limitations before playing.

Kristina Centenari, a certified fitness coach, highlighted the importance of incorporating strength training and mobility exercises into seniors’ workout routines to prepare for the physical demands of pickleball and reduce the risk of injuries.

Overall, the survey results and expert advice point to the positive impact of pickleball on seniors’ mental health and well-being, highlighting the sport as a fun and effective way for older adults to stay active, socialize, and improve their overall quality of life.
