According to a new survey conducted by Carewell, a North Carolina-based company that supports caregivers, playing pickleball has been linked to reduced stress and anxiety among seniors.
The survey, which included 1,000 Americans, found that nearly 70% of older adults reported feeling less stressed and anxious after playing pickleball. Additionally, 64% of participants described the game as “uplifting,” highlighting the positive impact it has on their overall well-being.
But the benefits of pickleball go beyond just mental health. Half of the seniors surveyed mentioned that they value the sense of community that comes with playing the sport, while one in three reported experiencing enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.
James Campigotto, one of the researchers for Carewell, commented on the findings, stating, “Overall, our study sheds light on a compelling shift in societal attitudes toward aging, fitness, and family dynamics. The data proves the multifaceted impact of this sport on the well-being of seniors.”
In addition to the mental health benefits, pickleball also provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with younger family members. The survey revealed that around 36% of Gen Z and millennial players use physical activities like pickleball as a means to bond with their older family members.
Laura Gainor, a Florida-based founder of Vossberg Gainor, noted that the pandemic played a significant role in the sport’s rapid growth, as individuals sought outdoor activities that allowed for both recreation and social interaction. She emphasized the adaptability and accessibility of pickleball, making it an appealing choice for people of all ages.
As pickleball continues to rise in popularity, experts are also emphasizing the importance of safety for senior players. Proper court shoes, warm-up exercises, and strength training are recommended to prevent injuries and enhance performance on the court.
Overall, the survey results highlight the positive impact that pickleball is having on seniors’ mental and physical well-being, as well as the strong sense of community and connection that the sport fosters across generations.
