Pickleball, a paddle sport that has been gaining popularity in recent years, is not just a fun activity for older adults – it’s also proving to be a powerful tool for improving mental health. According to a new survey conducted by Carewell, a North Carolina-based company that supports caregivers, playing pickleball has a range of positive effects on seniors’ psyche.

The survey, which included 1,000 Americans, found that nearly 70% of older adults reported reduced stress and anxiety after playing pickleball, while 64% found the game to be “uplifting.” Additionally, half of the seniors surveyed valued the sense of community that comes with pickleball, and one in three experienced enhanced cognition and increased self-esteem.

James Campigotto, one of the researchers for Carewell, highlighted the impact of the sport on seniors’ well-being, stating, “Overall, our study sheds light on a compelling shift in societal attitudes toward aging, fitness, and family dynamics. The data proves the multifaceted impact of this sport on the well-being of seniors.”

Beyond the mental health benefits, pickleball also provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with younger family members. The survey found that around 36% of Gen Z and millennial players use physical activities like pickleball as a means to bond with their older family members.

Laura Gainor, founder of Vossberg Gainor and Pickleball in the Sun, noted that the pandemic played a significant role in the sport’s growth, as individuals sought outdoor activities that allowed for both recreation and social interaction. She emphasized the sport’s adaptability and accessibility, making it an appealing choice for people of all ages.

As pickleball’s popularity continues to rise, experts are also emphasizing the importance of safety for senior players. Proper court shoes, warm-up routines, and strength training are all recommended to prevent injuries and enhance performance on the court.

With its mental health benefits, sense of community, and physical activity opportunities, pickleball is proving to be much more than just a game for seniors. It’s a holistic approach to well-being that is bringing generations together and improving overall quality of life.
