Wichita State’s Pickleball Court Rebuilding Plans Face Uncertainty
Plans to rebuild Wichita State’s pickleball courts hit a roadblock after the Student Government Association voted against providing $137,000 to help with the project. The decision came after concerns were raised about the proposed new location of the courts, leading to additional costs.
Scott Jensen, assistant vice president of Student Affairs Operations, explained at the SGA meeting that changing the location to preserve trees resulted in the need to remove a statue, adding to the project’s expenses. The original courts were moved due to renovations at Wilkins Stadium and the addition of a practice facility.
Despite efforts to secure funding from other sources, including Campus Recreation, no backup plan is currently in place. Jensen emphasized the importance of the pickleball courts and expressed confidence in finding a solution with Vice President for Student Affairs Teri Hall.
During the meeting, Senator Kian Williams questioned why the Student Government was being asked for funding when the university should prioritize student interests. On the other hand, Senator Gavin Barnes highlighted the popularity of the courts among students, advocating for the funding approval.
Suggestions for alternate locations were also discussed, with Senator Cynthia Pizzini proposing to explore other options to reduce costs. Senator Andrew Bobbitt recommended a vacant lot near the YMCA and future home of Campus Recreation as a potential site for the courts.
Ultimately, the Senate voted against providing the $137,000, with five in favor, 17 against, and five abstentions. The future of the pickleball courts remains uncertain as discussions continue on finding a viable solution for the project.
