Active Aging: Pickleball Players Compete at Florida Senior Games
The Florida Senior Games recently showcased the competitive spirit and camaraderie of pickleball players over the age of 50. The tournament, held at the Wiregrass Ranch Sports Campus, saw nearly 600 players from Florida and beyond competing for a chance to qualify for the National Senior Games in 2025.
Among the participants were inspiring individuals like Ruth Weil, 76, who started playing pickleball 15 years ago and continues to stay active despite knee issues. Her dedication to the sport has earned her a spot in the national games next year, where she will compete in both pickleball and softball alongside her wife, Joy.
Another remarkable player is Gene Berg, 72, who aims to medal in senior games in every state. With 36 medals already under his belt, Gene’s passion for pickleball is evident as he and his wife Margaret travel from competition to competition in their Airstream.
Tania Miller, 57, and Sondra Boruty, 58, found a deep connection through pickleball, forming a strong partnership on and off the court. Their shared love for the sport has brought them closer together and led them to success at the Florida Senior Games.
These stories highlight the diverse backgrounds and motivations of pickleball players, showcasing how the sport brings people together and promotes active aging. As players like Debra Wells-Lynn, 70, continue to coach and inspire others, pickleball remains a popular choice for older athletes looking to stay healthy, competitive, and connected through sports.
