St. Joseph City Council approved several key projects including a $796,000 pickleball complex at Corby Grove, featuring eight regulation courts, enhanced lighting, seating, and improved sidewalks, funded by parks tax and CIP funds. This development responds to the rapid growth of pickleball, the fastest growing sport in the U.S. for the third consecutive year. Additionally, the council greenlit a $225,000 contribution from Friends of the Animal Shelter toward the ongoing $5 million construction of a new 13,000-square-foot animal shelter on South Belt Highway, aiming for staff occupancy by June 2026.
Other approved initiatives include nearly $1 million for technology infrastructure upgrades to modernize city systems, a $336,814 contract to replace seating at historic Phil Welch Stadium, and a $19.8 million commitment for the future closure and post-closure care of the city landfill in 2047. The council also authorized funding for a Hyde Park maintenance building and applied for a $240,000 Military Community Reinvestment Grant to support a training simulator at Rosecrans Air National Guard base.
