The Impact of Pickleball on Injury Rates in Canada
The popularity of pickleball continues to grow in Canada, with one million Canadians taking up the low-impact racket sport in 2022, according to Pickleball Canada. By 2025, that number has increased to an estimated 1.54 million, showcasing the widespread appeal of the game.
However, with the rise in popularity comes an increase in injuries related to pickleball. Physiotherapist Chelsey Hobson from Leading Edge Physio notes that they are seeing more people from all walks of life playing the sport, leading to a rise in injuries. These injuries can range from minor pains in the elbow, knee, wrist, or shoulder to more severe injuries like head injuries, ACL tears, Achilles ruptures, or severe calf strains.
Recovery from severe pickleball-related injuries can take weeks and may require crutches or surgery. In Edmonton, physiotherapist offices and walk-in clinics have reported an increase in pickleball-related injuries, with new cases coming in at least once a week over the past few months.
As the popularity of pickleball continues to rise, it is important for players to take precautions to prevent injuries and seek proper treatment if they do occur. Stay tuned for more updates on this growing trend in sports.
