New Health Club Set to Open in South End, Featuring Pickleball Courts and More
New Bedford, MA — Excitement is building in the South End as the Southeast Sportsplex Health and Fitness Club prepares to open its doors next year at 11 David Street. This state-of-the-art facility will offer a diverse range of athletic opportunities, including pickleball courts, batting cages, and comprehensive fitness training facilities.
The new health club aims to cater to all ages and abilities, boasting a capacity of 250 people in its recreation area. In addition to pickleball and batting cages, the club will feature golf simulators, basketball courts, and specialized training programs. It will also host camps, clinics, and group classes, ensuring that everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes can find something to suit their needs.
This initiative aligns with the goals of the South End Baseball League and other local sports leagues, providing essential training spaces to enhance athletic performance during the winter months. The facility will also include storage and warehouse space for health club equipment.
The Southeast Sportsplex Health and Fitness Club is part of the Waterfront Mill Redevelopment District, which emphasizes the adaptive reuse of mill buildings. The current site, previously occupied by North East Silicon Technologies, has a history of industrial use, having once fabricated freezer insulation panels. The Planning Board has unanimously approved the project, with construction expected to be completed within two to three months following the issuance of the building permit.
Ward 6 City Councilor Ryan Pereira expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I think a recreational space particularly in this area is going to be a great benefit to the neighborhood and the city as a whole.”
While the Planning Board does not anticipate parking issues, restrictions will be in place on the north side of David Street at the intersection with East Rodney French Boulevard.
As the community eagerly awaits the opening of the Southeast Sportsplex Health and Fitness Club, it promises to be a vibrant addition to the South End, fostering health, wellness, and athleticism for residents of all ages.
