Rockingham County Celebrates Grand Opening of New Recreation Center

Rockingham County officials celebrated the completion of the new Rockingham Recreation Center with a soft opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday. The 80,000-square-foot facility, located at Rockingham Park at the Crossroads, boasts an indoor track, four basketball courts, classrooms, a concession stand, and a planned sensory room.

The center will be used for high school and college track meets and sports, as well as open to the public once the schedule is finalized. County Supervisor Rick Chandler, whose district includes Penn Laird and the rec center, expressed excitement about the opportunities the facility will provide for the community.

Chandler highlighted the benefits for local high schools, seniors, and possibly colleges, noting that the indoor track and courts will offer a space for various activities, including pickleball and walking. The center will also serve as the new home for the county’s Parks and Recreation department.

Deputy director Marco Knorr emphasized the versatility of the space, mentioning potential activities such as indoor soccer, wrestling, and even prom events. The center’s first official event will be the Valley District High School Indoor Track and Field District Championship on Feb. 8.

Overall, officials and community members are thrilled about the completion of the Rockingham Recreation Center and the positive impact it will have on the area.
