Improvements and Updates at Ala Moana Regional Park

Title: Enhancements to Surveillance and Park Amenities at Ala Moana Regional Park

In a bid to improve safety and connectivity at Ala Moana Regional Park, the installation of 25 new surveillance cameras has been completed. These cameras, strategically placed on street lights around the park, aim to enhance security measures and assist in emergency situations and large events.

The addition of these fixed-position, infrared cameras complements the existing 23 cameras near the bathrooms/bathhouses, bringing the total to 48 cameras in the park. While the cameras will not be continuously monitored, they will serve as a deterrent to criminal activity and provide valuable footage for investigations when needed.

The installation of these cameras is part of a broader technological upgrade to improve network connectivity within the park, as well as to police and lifeguard facilities in Ala Moana. The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation now boasts a total of 165 cameras across 16 parks, with Ala Moana Regional Park being a key focus.

Furthermore, the park is set to undergo additional enhancements, including the addition of dedicated pickleball courts and ongoing renovations to McCoy Pavilion. The collaboration with the community and neighborhood board aims to strike a balance between various park user groups, ensuring that all needs are met.

Ala Moana Regional Park, a historic landmark with a rich legacy dating back to the 1930s, continues to evolve to meet the needs of its four million annual visitors. Recognized as the 6th "Best City Park" in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, the park remains a cherished resource for residents and visitors alike.

With ongoing projects focused on park improvements and amenities, Ala Moana Regional Park is poised to maintain its status as a premier destination in Honolulu. From enhanced surveillance measures to recreational enhancements, the park continues to evolve to meet the needs of its diverse user base.
