Central Plumas Recreation and Parks District Opens Indoor Recreation Center at Serpilio Hall

The Central Plumas Recreation and Parks District has made a dream a reality with the opening of an indoor recreation center at Serpilio Hall on the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds in Quincy. This new facility is the first of its kind in the area, offering a variety of activities for youth and families in the community.

Equipped with board games, recreational equipment, and a removable wood laminate floor with markings for basketball, volleyball, and pickleball, the center provides adult-supervised after-school fun for kids from 2 to 5 p.m. on school days. Additionally, a full schedule of athletic activities for all ages will be offered during the winter months, including youth volleyball led by recreation coordinator Nicole Kochanowski.

Kochanowski expressed her excitement about the new opportunities the center will provide, such as video games, board games, cornhole, and basketball. She highlighted the importance of offering a safe and controlled space for kids after school, where adult supervision, snacks, water, and games are always available.

The idea for the indoor recreation center came about due to a lack of indoor space for kids to engage in activities during the winter months. Central Plumas Recreation and Parks District General Manager James Shipp recognized this need and worked to secure funding for the project. Through the sale of part of the district’s property to Plumas Charter School, $170,000 was raised to make the indoor recreation center a reality.

With the support of Fair Manager John Steffanic and the fair’s board of directors, Serpilio Hall will now serve as a winter indoor recreation space from November 1 to May 1. The facility will be used for various activities, including pickleball, youth wrestling, seated yoga, and roller skating, with schedules and registration information available online.

The opening of the indoor recreation center at Serpilio Hall marks a significant milestone for the Central Plumas Recreation and Parks District, providing a valuable resource for the community to stay active and engaged throughout the year.
