Local Business Owner Proposes Indoor Pickleball Facility in Mashpee

MASHPEE — William Russell, a local business owner, presented his plans for an indoor pickleball facility to the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation on Jan. 30 at the town hall. Russell hopes to establish the facility on a 3.59-acre parcel at 51 Evergreen Circle off Route 130.

Russell envisions the facility, named Island Pickle, as a hub for pickleball enthusiasts in the region. With the closest facility of scale located in Hanover, Russell believes that Island Pickle could attract new customers who may also visit nearby businesses like Mashpee Commons or Cape Cod Coffee.

The proposed 35,000-square-foot indoor recreation complex would feature 10 pickleball courts, eight Trackman golf simulators, a pro shop, restaurant, and sports-themed bar. The facility would be open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the possibility of extended weekend hours and food service from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Russell, who co-owns the Pineapple Caper Cafe in Osterville and is a commercial real estate specialist with Commercial Realty Advisors, emphasized the potential economic benefits of the facility. “A rising tide lifts all boats, and I think I’m here to rise a tide,” he said.

While pickleball has grown in popularity, its noise levels have sparked controversy in some communities. Russell believes that an indoor venue would mitigate noise concerns associated with the sport.

The project is currently under contract, pending permitting and approvals. The proposed facility would require a zoning bylaw amendment, as the lot is currently in an industrial zone that does not allow for indoor recreational facilities. The Mashpee Planning Board has submitted a draft zoning article to authorize indoor recreation facilities in the relevant zoning district for consideration at the next town meeting.

Russell had previously considered other locations for the facility, including Capetown Plaza in Hyannis, but eventually settled on the Evergreen Circle site in Mashpee. With plans for expert pickleball and golf staff to offer lessons, Island Pickle aims to be a destination for sports enthusiasts in the region.
