The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) has received a major boost with the addition of renowned actor and sports enthusiast Abhishek Bachchan as a co-owner. The league, backed by the cricket boards of Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, is set to showcase top-tier cricket talent from the participating nations and around the world. Bachchan’s involvement adds global appeal to the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from July 15th to August 3rd, 2025.
The growth and development of the ETPL have been guided by an interim working group comprising representatives from the three cricket boards and strategic partner Rules Sports Tech. This group is focused on shaping key decisions and establishing an administrative body to effectively manage the tournament.
Bachchan expressed his excitement about the collaboration, stating, “Cricket is a unifying force that transcends boundaries. The ETPL is the ideal platform to showcase cricket’s global appeal, especially with the sport set to be included in the 2028 Olympics. I am dedicated to working with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the ETPL and bring cricket closer to millions across Europe.”
Warren Deutrom, CEO of Cricket Ireland and Chair of the ETPL, welcomed Bachchan’s involvement, emphasizing the value of his passion for sports and entrepreneurial acumen in elevating European cricket. With the support of the ICC and Bachchan’s commitment, the tournament aims to create a cricket experience that inspires young talent and provides a platform for European cricket on the global stage.
Saurav Banerjee, Director of the ETPL, highlighted the momentum cricket is gaining in Europe and the goal of making it a major sport in the region. With six teams set to compete and extensive media coverage planned, the tournament is expected to reach audiences worldwide, with key markets including Europe, India, Australia, and England.
The financial framework of the league is supported by KPMG, providing advisory services to ensure transparency and sustainability for all stakeholders. A formal launch event for the ETPL will be announced soon, offering details on franchise ownership, team names, and the player draft.
