Serving Smiles: Simplified Pickleball for People Living with Alzheimer’s in Lakewood

In Lakewood, Colorado, a group of dedicated pickleball players have found a way to make the sport accessible to those living with Alzheimer’s disease. Known as “simplified pickleball,” this modified version of the game aims to provide physical and cognitive benefits to players while also creating a sense of community and joy.

Founder Chris Beal noticed that some older players were struggling to remember the rules of traditional pickleball, prompting her to simplify the game for those with Alzheimer’s. By removing the complicated aspects and focusing on fun and engagement, players are able to enjoy the sport without feeling intimidated.

The group meets weekly at the Charles Whitlock Recreation Center in Lakewood, where volunteers spend two hours playing pickleball with participants. The only requirements are mobility and having a caregiver present, making it accessible to all who want to join.

For players like Betty, who lives with Alzheimer’s, simplified pickleball has become a source of joy and activity. Head volunteer Joanna Diers emphasizes the importance of staying active and engaged, drawing from her own experiences with her mother who had Alzheimer’s.

While the group faced a decrease in numbers during the pandemic, they are now looking to recruit more players to continue growing the community and providing support for those living with Alzheimer’s. The group meets every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., welcoming players of all experience levels and providing all necessary equipment.

Beyond the physical and cognitive benefits, simplified pickleball in Lakewood is about creating a supportive and uplifting environment for those facing the challenges of Alzheimer’s. As Beal and Diers express, the joy and appreciation from players make the effort truly rewarding, highlighting the power of sports in bringing people together and making a positive impact on those in need.
