UConn Pickleball Club Making Waves on Campus and Beyond
The passion for pickleball has taken over the University of Connecticut campus, as students have revived the UConn pickleball club and seen its popularity soar.
Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports globally, has attracted millions of players across the United States, including those at UConn. The club’s members, like junior Brian Oppenheim, were drawn to the sport for its social aspect and competitive nature.
Since its inception four years ago, the UConn pickleball club has grown exponentially, with graduate student David Hatch noting the rise of national collegiate leagues and tournaments. The club’s success has even led some members to believe that pickleball could become an official NCAA sport in the near future.
However, one major obstacle stands in the way of the club’s progress – the lack of an official pickleball court on campus. This has forced members to organize carpools and travel to nearby facilities for practice and competitions.
Despite the challenges, the UConn pickleball club has thrived, allowing its members to travel across the country and compete in prestigious tournaments. Club president Heather Kim emphasized that their main goal is to have fun and build lasting bonds on the court.
As the club gears up for the DUPR Nationals, these Huskies are not only enjoying the thrill of competition but also shaping their college experience through their love for pickleball.
