Pickleball is rapidly gaining popularity not only across the United States but also in Guam and the surrounding region, sparking increased international tournament participation. From July 4 to 6, 19 members of the Pickleball Guam Association (PGA) will compete in the Kinto Japan Cup in Nagoya, Japan. PGA President Elwin Quitano aims to showcase Guam’s talent by winning medals and fostering strong regional connections, particularly through a budding sister-relationship with the Japan Pickleball Association that has already provided benefits such as waived fees and special accommodations for Guam players.
Since its founding in 2021, PGA has primarily hosted local tournaments but now seeks to expand its reach internationally. Players like Adrian Aguilo, who recently began playing and competed in Mexico, are enthusiastic about testing their skills abroad and hope for more international events on Guam. Despite recent weather challenges affecting outdoor practice, Quitano has secured indoor venues to ensure the team is well-prepared, emphasizing the sport’s social appeal and the opportunities it creates for cultural exchange and community building across Asia.
