Pickleball Governing Body Seeks National Sports Federation Recognition
The All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) is making strides towards gaining recognition as a National Sports Federation (NSF) after the successful hosting of the inaugural World Pickleball Championship in Mumbai. With around 650 players from various countries participating in the event, the sport is gaining momentum and attracting attention on a global scale.
AIPA chief Arvind Prabhoo expressed optimism about the sport’s future, stating that the association had submitted the necessary paperwork to the sports ministry for recognition. He also mentioned the goal of achieving Olympic status for pickleball in the coming years, with preparations already underway to train young Indian players for future competitions.
One of the key factors contributing to the sport’s popularity is the affordability of equipment, with Indian companies now manufacturing paddles and balls at a fraction of the previous cost. This accessibility, coupled with the minimal space requirements for playing, makes pickleball a viable option for those looking to engage in a racquet sport without breaking the bank.
Furthermore, sponsorship and funding support from AIPA are helping to promote grassroots development of the sport in various states across the country. With its low physical demand and recreational appeal, pickleball is gaining traction as a lifestyle game for the new age, both in India and around the world.
As the sport continues to grow in popularity and accessibility, the prospect of seeing Indian athletes compete and excel in international competitions, including the Olympics, becomes increasingly promising. With the support of AIPA and the sports ministry, pickleball may soon secure its place as a recognized and respected sport on the national and global stage.
