Paso Robles City Council Approves $4 Million Project for New Pickleball Courts at Sherwood Park
Paso Robles residents can look forward to some exciting new additions at Sherwood Park, as the City Council recently approved a $4 million project for seven new pickleball courts, new bathrooms, and a parking lot. The decision, made in a 4-1 vote on Nov. 19, will bring a much-anticipated upgrade to the popular park.
The project, awarded to JJ Fisher Construction with a $3.3 million contract, will be funded by various sources, including park development fees and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Originally estimated at $1.2 million, the project required an additional $3 million due to increased labor, materials, and design costs.
To cover the additional expenses, the council decided to reallocate funds from the city’s South Vine Street bridge project budget. While some council members expressed concerns about taking funds from another project, the majority agreed that the benefits of the new pickleball courts outweighed the drawbacks.
Despite some opposition from residents, including City Council candidate Linda George, who criticized the decision to use funds from the bridge project, the council ultimately approved the project. Interim City Manager Chris Huot and Treasurer Ryan Cornell confirmed that no funding from the I-24 sales tax measure would be used for the project.
Councilmember Steven Gregory emphasized that the project is not just about pickleball courts but also about improving Sherwood Park for the community. Construction is expected to begin in April 2025 and be completed by early 2026, providing residents with a new and exciting recreational space to enjoy.
Overall, the approval of the $4 million project for new pickleball courts at Sherwood Park marks a significant step forward for the Paso Robles community, offering residents a valuable addition to their local recreational facilities.
