Orillia Skatepark and Pickleball Court Funding Denied, But Community Remains Determined

Posted In:

Plans for a new skatepark and pickleball courts in Orillia have stalled after the city was denied provincial funding through the 2024 Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund. Despite the setback, city officials and community advocates emphasize that the projects remain priorities, with the skatepark design complete and shovel-ready, and the pickleball courts still in early development. The city plans to explore alternative funding sources, possibly submitting future grant applications separately for each project, while continuing engagement with community groups who have already contributed financially and remain committed to seeing the facilities built.

Local advocates express disappointment but remain determined to push forward. Mark Watson, a longtime skateboarding supporter, highlights the growing need for a modern facility to accommodate increased interest in skateboarding and related sports, urging the city to seek corporate donations and other funding avenues beyond government grants. Similarly, Frank Corker, president of the Orillia Pickleball Club, stresses the urgent demand for more courts to support the large local player base and potential tournaments. Both communities are optimistic about regrouping with city officials to develop a revised plan and continue advocating for these important recreational amenities.
