The Rise of Pickleball in Utah: John Gullo Inducted into National Pickleball Hall of Fame

Pickleball, a sport that has been rapidly gaining popularity across the U.S., has found a special place in the hearts of Utah residents. According to the Apple Heart & Movement Study, Utah has the highest participation in pickleball per capita among study subjects, and tops the nation in online searches for the sport on Google Trends.

One man who has played a significant role in the growth of pickleball in Utah is John Gullo from Ogden. At 80 years old, Gullo has been announced as a member of the National Pickleball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 in recognition of his efforts to promote the sport regionally and professionally.

Gullo’s journey with pickleball began in his mid-60s, following a health scare that led him to lose 100 pounds. He discovered the sport while undergoing rehabilitation and quickly became passionate about it. Gullo took it upon himself to establish pickleball courts in Ogden and other cities, leading to the proliferation of over 360 courts in Northern Utah today.

In addition to his contributions to the infrastructure of the sport, Gullo also founded the Tournament of Champions, one of the highest-paying pickleball competitions at the time. The tournament was the first to pay and house referees and to be livestreamed, setting a new standard for professional pickleball events.

Gullo’s impact on the sport has been profound, with his efforts paving the way for the growth of professional pickleball and the emergence of players making six-figure salaries. Despite his significant contributions, Gullo remains humble and amazed by the sport’s incredible growth.

Joining Gullo in the 2024 class of the Pickleball Hall of Fame are Simone Jardim and Kyle Yates, both recognized for their outstanding achievements in the sport. Stu Upson, President of the Pickleball HOF, praised the inductees for their contributions to the game and their success at the professional level.

Gullo’s induction into the National Pickleball Hall of Fame is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport, and a well-deserved recognition of his role in shaping the pickleball landscape in Utah and beyond.
