Pickleball Players in Northfield Advocate for More Courts at Sechler Park: Full Report and City Council Approval
The City of Northfield is gearing up for some exciting changes at Sechler Park, thanks to the growing popularity of pickleball. With pickleball being named the fastest-growing sport in the United States for three consecutive years, it’s no surprise that Northfield residents are eager to see more opportunities for this fun and engaging activity.
After collecting input from the community, it was clear that pickleball was a top priority for many residents. A group of 173 players organized in April and has been advocating for additional outdoor courts at Sechler Park or another location. The group also highlighted the need for improvements to current spaces, including lighting, seating pavilions, and bathrooms.
What sets pickleball apart is the demographic of its players in Northfield. According to a survey conducted by the group, 78% of pickleball players in Northfield are over 50 years old. This highlights the need for more recreational opportunities for older adults in the community, as current park activities mainly cater to youth and younger adults.
The final design for Sechler Park includes ample space for additional pickleball courts, ensuring that the needs of the growing pickleball community are met. Anna Springer, one of the park designers, emphasized the importance of working with the pickleball group to create a design that serves their needs well into the future.
With pickleball gaining popularity nationwide and in Northfield, it’s clear that this sport is here to stay. The City of Northfield is committed to providing recreational opportunities for residents of all ages, and the future of Sechler Park is looking bright with the addition of more pickleball courts.
