North Liberty Youth Council Newsletter – January 2025
The North Liberty Youth Council is making waves in the community by addressing the pressing issue of mental health among local high school students. Established in 2022, the Youth Council aims to engage students in city affairs, develop leadership skills, and advocate for the needs of young people in North Liberty.
In a recent survey conducted by the Youth Council, mental health emerged as a major concern among youth in North Liberty. To address this issue, the Youth Council has launched a Mental Health Corner in their newsletter, focusing on study habits and time management as key factors in reducing stress and anxiety.
One effective strategy highlighted in the newsletter is spaced studying, where students distribute their study material over several days to avoid last-minute cramming. This method not only reduces stress but also improves retention and long-term memory. Additionally, taking short breaks while studying, such as using the Pomodoro technique, can help students recharge and increase productivity.
In addition to mental health resources, the Youth Council is also organizing a series of upcoming events to bring the community together. From a pickleball tournament for high school students to a flag football tournament for middle school students, these events aim to promote teamwork, friendly competition, and community spirit.
Furthermore, the Youth Council is hosting a Hygiene Products Drive to support community members in need of essential items. Drop-off locations are available at various spots in North Liberty, and donations of toilet paper and feminine products are especially appreciated.
Another exciting initiative by the Youth Council is STEMpact: Youth to Youth, a mentorship program where high school students will lead sessions on STEM topics for younger students. The first session on computer science will take place at the North Liberty Library on January 25th.
