Senior citizens in Newton County have embraced pickleball, a popular and enjoyable physical activity, to the extent that they raised $40,000 to build a dedicated pickleball court at the new Senior Enrichment Center, set to open in October. Currently, about 60 seniors use makeshift indoor courts at the Recreation Department, but these are limited in availability and not ideal. The new court will provide seniors with full access during center hours, enhancing both their physical activity and social interaction.
The initiative, led by Newton County Senior Services Director Freda Reed, received unanimous approval from the County Board of Commissioners. The new Senior Enrichment Center, located on the west side of the county, will serve seniors from both sides of Newton County, offering a dedicated space for pickleball and other activities. Reed emphasized that the court not only promotes health but also fosters community and relationships among seniors.
