2024 Pickleball Rule Changes: What You Need to Know

The 2024 pickleball season is set to kick off with some new rule changes that players and fans alike will need to be aware of. While not as impactful as previous years, these changes still bring some interesting updates to the sport.

One of the key changes is the modification of the Droopy Net Rule, which now mandates a replay if the ball hits the net, goes over, and then hits a drooping net on the ground. This rule aims to ensure fair play and consistency in gameplay.

Another notable change is the “Calling for the Ref” rule on paddle inspection issues. Players can now call for the Head Referee or a Tournament Director to validate their opponent’s paddle if they suspect it is illegal. This rule adds an extra layer of accountability to the game.

Additionally, Skinny Singles rules have been officially codified in the rulebook, recognizing “Mini-Singles” as a sanctioned tournament category. This provides players with more opportunities to compete in different formats.

Other changes include the ability to use Regular Time Outs at the end of a Medical Time Out and the allowance to overrule a Ref’s call for replay on an Appealed call. These changes aim to enhance the overall player experience and ensure fair play on the court.

While some proposed rule changes did not make the cut, such as banning the ATP and expanding the NVZ to 8-feet, the committee focused on implementing changes that would benefit the sport without drastically altering its core gameplay.

Overall, the 2024 pickleball season promises to be an exciting one with these new rule changes in place. Players and fans can look forward to seeing how these updates impact the game as competitions get underway.
