Exciting Expansion: Staunton’s New YMCA Facility to Feature Pickleball Complex
Staunton’s New YMCA Facility: Pickleball is coming to Staunton’s newest YMCA facility, as part of a major expansion at the YMCA’s New Hope Road location. Alongside a childcare center, teen center, and indoor recreation complex, the development will feature a state-of-the-art pickleball complex, further solidifying the sport’s rapid growth in the region.
The Staunton-Augusta YMCA, with the help of a donor, purchased 37 acres of land at 575 New Hope Road, just east of Statler Boulevard, to create a multi-purpose greenspace that will cater to children, teens, and sports enthusiasts.
While the initial phase of construction will focus on childcare, youth facilities, and an indoor recreation center, the pickleball complex is a key component of the overall project. The YMCA aims to offer dedicated space for open play, lessons, and leagues, bringing more opportunities to players of all levels.
“We recognize the demand for recreational activities for all ages, and pickleball has become an important part of that vision,” said Alison Varner-Denbigh, project manager for the New Hope Road development.
The planned indoor recreation center will feature two large basketball courts (also used for youth leagues), two classrooms, a dedicated teen center, and a pickleball complex for open play, clinics, and tournaments.
The entire New Hope Road project is expected to cost over $10 million, with funding coming from grants and private donations. A $2 million donation has already been received, covering initial work and site grading. A fundraising campaign is ongoing, with opportunities for donors to be recognized on a Founder’s Wall inside the childcare and youth center.
Pickleball continues to grow in popularity nationwide, and Staunton’s YMCA expansion will provide much-needed court space for players of all skill levels. The inclusion of indoor courts means year-round play, allowing for tournaments, training, and community leagues regardless of weather conditions.
The New Hope Road YMCA expansion represents a significant investment in Staunton’s youth and sports programs. With additional fundraising, the facility will continue to evolve, adding even more recreational opportunities for all ages.
In summary, the Staunton-Augusta YMCA is expanding with a new facility on New Hope Road, featuring a childcare center, teen center, basketball courts, and a pickleball complex. The project is part of a $10 million development plan, with construction starting in early summer 2025. The pickleball courts will provide a new dedicated space for open play, clinics, and tournaments, supporting the sport’s rapid growth in the area.
