Burlington Celebrates Grand Opening of New Pickleball Complex

BURLINGTON, NC — The sound of paddles striking pickleballs echoed through Burlington City Park on Friday as residents gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a brand-new pickleball complex. Among the enthusiastic crowd was Sheila Simpson, a Mebane resident and former triathlete who discovered her passion for the sport just nine months ago after recovering from a broken ankle.

“I was ready to get back into athletics, and from that moment on, I was hooked,” Simpson shared, reflecting on her journey back to fitness. Her story resonated with many at the event, which drew hundreds of pickleball enthusiasts eager to explore the complex’s 17 courts, shaded areas, and a variety of special events.

The grand opening featured a festive ribbon-cutting ceremony, beginner classes, and exciting raffles, creating a vibrant atmosphere that showcased the community’s enthusiasm for the sport. Josh Stewart, the director of fun for the Burlington Sock Puppets, played a key role in organizing the event. A self-proclaimed pickleball enthusiast, Stewart has been playing for over five years and expressed his excitement about the new facilities.

“It’s a privilege to be a part of this community that’s growing and honestly becoming even more fun than it’s already been,” Stewart said, highlighting the camaraderie that pickleball fosters among players of all skill levels.

The complex is open to all Burlington residents, with membership options offering additional perks such as court rentals, access to a ball machine, and merchandise discounts. This inclusive approach aims to make pickleball accessible to everyone, from seasoned players to newcomers.

In a corner of the complex, a vibrant mural painted by local artist Artie Barksdale III adds a splash of color and creativity. Barksdale, who completed the mural just in time for the opening, expressed his pride in the collaborative effort that brought the artwork to life. “When you got that many people agreeing and cheering you on, that’s what gave it the momentum that it needed,” he said.

For Simpson, the welcoming nature of the pickleball community has been a highlight of her experience. “Everybody was really nice and welcoming and very encouraging,” she noted. “Everyone plays with everyone, and I think it’s wonderful.”

The event also attracted young players, including 11-year-old Drew, 8-year-old Vida, and 9-year-old Colton, who described the day as “awesome and exciting.” Colton added, “If you’re coming to this pickleball court, I hope you have a great time.”

As the sun set over Burlington City Park, the new pickleball complex stood as a testament to community spirit and resilience, offering a space for connection, competition, and fun for all ages. With plans for clinics and tournaments on the horizon, the complex is poised to become a beloved hub for pickleball enthusiasts in the area.
