New York City has unveiled design plans for a $9.92 million reconstruction of Wolfe’s Pond Park playground in Staten Island, featuring an expanded, fully accessible playground for children of all abilities and the addition of three new pickleball courts. The inclusive playground, called the “field of dreams,” will include accessible play equipment, swings, a sensory spiral, water play areas, quiet zones, and nature exploration spaces, with separate areas for ages 2-5 and 5-12. An elevated walkway will provide access to ship-themed play structures, and the playground will be enclosed by a fence with ample seating.
The project, located at 420 Cornelia St. in Prince’s Bay, is currently in the design phase expected to conclude by spring 2026, with construction anticipated to take 12 to 18 months following procurement. Once completed, this new facility will complement existing inclusive playgrounds in Staten Island, such as the E.M.T. Christopher J. Prescott Sensory Playground, which serves children with autism and sensory processing disorders. The Parks Department has not yet announced an official opening date.
