Local Woman Discovers Joy of Pickleball, Builds Community Through Sport
Julie Richman, a Colorado Springs resident, never thought she would become a pickleball enthusiast. But after joining a neighborhood group last summer, she found herself hooked on the fast-paced game and the sense of community it brought.
Richman, who typically avoids shopping and spending money, made a surprising decision to purchase her own pickleball paddle after feeling guilty about borrowing one from fellow players. What started as a casual weekly gathering with neighbors quickly turned into a beloved pastime for Richman and her friends.
The group, led by neighbor Judy, set up a makeshift pickleball court on a local basketball court using blue duct tape to mark the lines. Despite initial confusion about the rules and scoring, Richman found joy in simply hitting the ball and enjoying the camaraderie of the group.
As the group grew in size and enthusiasm, they reached out to the city to request painted pickleball lines on the court. The city’s response was overwhelmingly positive, making it easier for the group to set up and play their games.
Richman and her fellow players, all over the age of 50, have found a sense of community and friendship through pickleball. They share stories of injuries and health challenges, support each other on and off the court, and even enjoy homemade treats brought by group members.
The popularity of pickleball is on the rise nationwide, with Montgomery County in Maryland even offering it as a varsity sport for teens. For Richman and her friends, pickleball is not just a game – it’s a way to stay active, socialize, and build lasting relationships.
As they continue to play and enjoy the sport, Richman and her group hope to inspire others to join in the fun and experience the joy of pickleball for themselves.
