MCPS Pioneers Global Pickleball Exchange in China

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is breaking new ground with its upcoming pickleball exchange program in China. A group of 31 student-athletes will embark on a journey to Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing from April 9-21, 2025, to participate in friendly competitions and cultural exchanges.

What makes this initiative even more remarkable is that MCPS is the first school district in the U.S. to offer pickleball as a varsity sport. The program, which started as a pilot in 11 high schools in 2023 and expanded to all 25 high schools in 2024, aims to use pickleball as a bridge between students from diverse backgrounds, highlighting the sport’s inclusive nature.

In preparation for the trip, students have been engaging in weekly pickleball practices and cultural sessions, reflecting MCPS’s dedication to using sports to bring people together and promote global understanding.

The exchange program has received support from key partners such as Dill Dinkers, a nationwide indoor pickleball facility, and JOOLA, the world’s largest pickleball company. Dill Dinkers is hosting training sessions for the students, while JOOLA is providing paddles and apparel.

“We are honored and excited to represent MCPS in this incredible opportunity to showcase the powerful impact of athletics in bringing people together,” said Jeffrey Sullivan, MCPS Director of Systemwide Athletics. “Pickleball is an inclusive sport that embodies our R.A.I.S.E. core values for MCPS Athletics, and we look forward to engaging in spirited competition while learning and embracing Chinese culture.”

Pickleball has been rapidly gaining popularity within MCPS, and this exchange program further solidifies its role in youth sports. The trip not only allows students to enhance their skills and experience new cultures but also expands the reach of the sport internationally. With continued support and enthusiasm, the program may pave the way for future global exchanges and increased investment in pickleball at the high school level.

In a nutshell, MCPS is pioneering a global pickleball exchange in China, promoting cultural understanding, sportsmanship, and the growth of pickleball both locally and internationally.
