West Michigan Sports Commission Announces $5.8 Million Fundraised for Expansion Project
The West Michigan Sports Commission received a significant boost in their fundraising efforts with a $1 million gift from Meijer, leading to additional donations totaling $5.8 million for their $11 million expansion project. The announcement was made during a private event at the Meijer Sports Complex, where officials discussed the progress and future plans for the project.
The expansion project includes the addition of a championship-level softball field, 20 pickleball courts, a new concession building, 300 parking spaces, and more. Donors such as the DeVos Family Foundations, Mercantile Bank, Mary Free Bed Guild, and others have pledged their support in response to Meijer’s generous gift.
According to officials, some elements of the project could begin as early as late 2023, with construction set to start this fall on improvements such as installing synthetic turf on the championship field and adding parking spaces. The goal is to accommodate more teams annually and increase visitor spending, ultimately benefiting the community and West Michigan youth.
Congresswoman Hillary Scholten also played a role in securing funding for the project, with $750,000 allocated from the House Committee on Appropriations for fiscal year 2024. She emphasized the importance of sports in bringing communities together and empowering young people, especially in light of the challenges faced during the pandemic.
The WMSC’s capital campaign, “A Winning Streak for West Michigan,” aims to enhance and expand the Meijer Sports Complex, which has already had a significant economic impact on Kent County. With the new expansion plans, officials are optimistic about the future benefits and opportunities the project will bring to the community.
