MCPS Student-Athletes Prepare for Cultural Exchange Trip to China

MCPS Athletes Gear Up for Pickleball Trip to China

In an exciting and unique opportunity, 31 student-athletes from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have been diligently practicing their pickleball skills and immersing themselves in Chinese culture in preparation for a special trip to China next month. From April 9-21, these athletes will travel to Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing, where they will engage in friendly competitions with Chinese students in each city.

Dr. Jeffrey Sullivan, MCPS Systemwide Athletics Director, emphasized the significance of this trip in fostering international friendships through sport. “The purpose of this trip is not just representing MCPS, the state of Maryland, but representing our country and building that friendship beyond borders through sport,” he stated.

The students, who come from nearly a dozen different high schools, have been honing their pickleball skills at Dill Dinkers in Rockville while also learning about Chinese culture and language. This unique combination of athletic training and cultural education aims to ensure that the students are well-prepared and informed travelers.

One of the highlights of the trip will be the opportunity for American and Chinese students to play doubles together, promoting camaraderie and cross-cultural understanding through the universal language of sports. This initiative has been made possible through the support of The Ministry of Education of China and the China Education Association for International Exchange.

MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor described the trip as a “once in a lifetime opportunity for cultural exchange,” emphasizing the importance of building bridges among young people, communities, and cultures. School Board President Julie Yang echoed this sentiment, highlighting the broader impact of the trip beyond just pickleball.

As the first school district in the U.S. to offer pickleball as a varsity sport, MCPS continues to innovate and provide unique opportunities for its students. The upcoming trip to China represents a significant milestone in promoting cultural exchange and fostering international friendships through the power of sports.
