“Return to Pickleball: Socially Distanced Fun at Tourtellotte Courts”
Mankato Pickleball Players Return to the Court with Social Distancing in Mind
Members of the Mankato Area Pickleball Association were eagerly awaiting the start of summer, but knew it would be a slow one due to the resurfacing of the Tourtellotte Courts, the only pickleball-specific courts in town. However, after construction was completed last week, players were able to return to the game on Friday, albeit with a few changes.
With social distancing in mind, players are keeping a safe distance from each other during games, as pickleball naturally requires players to be at least 8-10 feet apart. This makes it easier for players to enjoy the game while also staying safe.
For many players, the return to the court was much needed for both exercise and socialization. Pickleball offers a unique combination of physical activity and social interaction, making it a popular choice for many. The flexibility of scheduling games at Tourtellotte Courts also adds to the appeal, as players can choose to play whenever it fits their schedule.
Despite the return to the court, players are taking precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Many are wearing gloves while serving, using hand sanitizer, and bringing their own equipment to minimize contact with shared surfaces. While masks are not required, they are highly encouraged, especially for older players who may be at higher risk.
MAPA President John Sandry is pleased with the safety measures being taken by players and is hopeful that the sport can continue to thrive in the current environment. With a focus on mental and physical health, players are grateful to be back on the court and enjoying the game they love.
As player Earle Peters said, “I think for mental health, physical health … it’s a wonderful time to try to open something up that we all enjoy.”
